Establishment of an iPSC-based Preeclampsia Model with Trophoblasts and Hypoxia for Understanding Placental Dysfunction In Vitro

Congratulations to first author Mariko Horii and team at University of California San Diego on their work which was first published March 15 in Scientific Reports evidencing the utility of an in vitro model with iPSC-derived trophoblasts which were subjected to hypoxia (2% O2) for gaining human-relevant insight about preeclampsia and other placenta-based disorders during pregnancy.

Researchers Establish an In Vitro Model for Assessing Y90 Radiotherapy Effectiveness in Colon Cancer Cells at Tumor Relevant Oxygen Levels

Congratulations to first author Piotr Piasecki and colleagues at Military Institute of Medicine, Warsaw on their February 24 publication in Scientific Reports which demonstrated a cell-based model for evaluating anticancer activity by Yttrium-90 microspheres in colorectal cancer. Unlike most cell culture studies which occur at room air oxygen (21% O2), the team assessed antitumor activity at both physioxic (5% O2) and hypoxic (1% O2) conditions that replicate actual levels measured in solid tumors.

ITPP Attenuates Tumor Hypoxia In Vitro through Regulation of Angiogenesis and Enhances Anticancer Immunoresponse

Congratulations to lead author Bouchra El Hafny-Rahbi and colleagues from UPR 4301, Center for Molecular Biophysics, CNRS – Orleans on their findings first published online February 23rd in Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine which demonstrated in vitro that myo-inositol-trispyrophosphate (ITPP) modulates angiogenesis to reduce hypoxia in the cancer microenvironment and promote the antitumor immune response.

Hypoxia Combined with Dynamic Compression In Vitro Promotes Matrix-Forming Phenotype in Meniscus Fibrochondrocytes

Congratulations to lead author Alexander Szojka and colleagues from University of Alberta on their findings first published February 6th in Journal of Tissue Engineering which demonstrated that combining physiologic oxygen and dynamic compression with fibrochondrocytes in vitro promotes phenotypic properties which are favorable for human engineered meniscus.

Increased Penetration of Gold Nanoparticles in a Spheroid Blood-Brain Barrier Model following Hypoxic Exposure

Congratulations to lead author Viktoriya Sokolova and colleagues from University of Duisburg-Essen and Wake Forest School of Medicine on their findings published October 22nd in Scientific Reports demonstrating that ultrasmall gold nanoparticles can cross the blood-brain barrier and also that spheroid exposure to hypoxic levels increases BBB permeability and enhances nanoparticle penetration.
